SENATOR JAN MCLUCAS ACTING SHADOW MINISTER FOR FAMILIES AND PAYMENTS SENATOR FOR QUEENSLAND MEDIA RELEASE NEW YEAR’S REPRIEVE FROM ABBOTT’S UNFAIR CUTS Australians will benefit from a New Year’s reprieve from some of Tony Abbott’s most unfair Budget cuts. If Tony Abbott had gotten his way, the following cruel Budget measures would start from today: • Leaving young jobseekers without any income support up to six months • Increasing the age of eligibility for Newstart and Sickness Allowance • Axing the Pensioner Education Supplement • Axing the Education Entry Payment • Removing Grandfathering of Student Start-Up Scholarships Labor has so far been able to stop these savage cuts from hitting and hurting Australians. Tony Abbott wants to punish young jobseekers by kicking them off Newstart for six months. He wants to shift young people under 24 from Newstart onto the lower Youth Allowance would leave them $48 a week worse off. He wants to axe the Pensioner Education Supplement will leave someone $62 a fortnight worse off while they undertake study. And he wants to axe the Education Entry Payment will leave someone $208 a year worse off. Labor will continue to defend the most vulnerable members of our society by blocking these cuts.
