SENATORS STRUGGLE TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPH WITH NEW A/COURT PRESIDENT Shortly after Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa was confirmed by the Senate as President of the Appeal Court yesterday, many senators left their seats and moved outside to have a hand shake and take photographs with her. The chamber became almost empty, attracting the irk of Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba (PDP, Cross Rivers) who cautioned his colleagues to desists from running after nominees who appeared before them for screening because it was not good for their image. “During screening, the Senate should remain dignified. The practice where senators run after people who just bowed before you is not dignifying,” he said. Senate President David Mark in his ruling said: “We don’t have to follow the nominees out of the chamber. Please, we should sit where we are (and) if we want to see them later on, we can do so.” Senator Mark further said: “The way we go to take pictures and all that is not the best for elder statesmen who are our senators. I want to appreciate your cooperation in that aspect.” Senators then shouted in the affirmative “well guided.” Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday nominated five people for appointment into the Board of the National Population Commission (NPC). In a letter addressed to Senate President David Mark dated 20th March, 2014, Jonathan forwarded the names of Hon. Lanre Fayemi (Ekiti), Alhaji Baba Makau (Yobe), Alhaji Hassan Bashir (Bauchi), Alhaji Yusuf Mohammed Anka (Zamfara) and Alhaji Abdullahi Abarshi from Kebbi State for confirmation as members of the NPC board. Also yesterday, the President submitted the 2014 draft statutory budget of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to the Senate for consideration. Source: Daily Trust
