SEPT 8-This Day in Entertainment & Music History: 1956-Elvis Presley first appeared on the cover of TV Guide Magazine...1965-Variety, the show business newspaper, ran an ad titled: Madness!! Auditions for folk & rock musicians-singers for acting roles in new TV series. Running parts for 4 insane boys, age 17 to 21. The ad drew responses from over 400 applicants including Stephen Stills. In the end, the 4 available acting roles were given to Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith. The young men became known as the Monkees and almost exactly a year later, their groundbreaking show debuted on NBC-TV. In their very first year, the Monkees sold over 8 million albums...1966-Dick Clark guest starring role on ABC-TVs Batman...1972-Witchy Woman by the Eagles entered the pop chart. This was the 2nd of three hit singles from their debut album. The first was Take It Easy, and still to come was Peaceful Easy Feeling...1976-Peter Frampton was given a tour of the White House. Frampton was invited to Washington, DC by Stephen Ford, son of then-president Gerald Ford...1988-Elton John auctioned off his private collection of stage costumes and memorabilia. The proceeds of the auction netted over 6 million dollars for charity.
