SETTING UP THE HORSE AND THEN LETTING GO. Horses are taught to walk, trot, canter and maintain rhythm off one aid. We are not supposed to ask them to maintain the trot/walk/canter and rhythm at every stride. If this is a principle of riding, then why is it not in, what I call traditional riding (competition), followed through for all aids? If this principle were followed through, horses would be allowed to go in a round frame with the lightest of contact in competition without being penalised. (Even with loopy reins as shown here with Davenport Papillon and below with Hayley). Just as they maintain the trot rhythm by themselves they should maintain piaffe and passage rhythm by themselves and so too, self carriage. It is as the Classicists such as Baucher, Oliviera, Racinet, Phillipe Karl all preach.
