SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING - SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND for DAMAGING WIND and LARGE HAILSTONES For people in parts of the BRISBANE CITY, GOLD COAST CITY, LOGAN CITY, GYMPIE, SUNSHINE COAST, REDLAND CITY and North Stradbroke Island Council Areas. Issued at 4:44 pm Sunday, 24 November 2013. The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:45 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Archerfield and Lake Cooloola. These thunderstorms are moving towards the northeast to southeast. They are forecast to affect Beenleigh, Logan City and Mount Cotton by 5:15 pm and Hope Island, South Stradbroke Island and Jacobs Well by 5:45 pm. Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely. Pea size hail was reported at Oxley at 4:40pm. Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should: * Move your car under cover or away from trees. * Secure loose outdoor items. * Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. * Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm. * Beware of fallen trees and powerlines. * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500. The next warning is due to be issued by 5:45 pm. A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields and Capricornia districts. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureaus website at bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 219. The Bureau and Emergency Management Queensland would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly. (4 photos)
