It is used by the Jewish people to greet somebody, at any time (“Hello”); it also means “peace”, which is rooted in the word “Shalem”, which means completion. Without peace, there can be no completion. The background text contains “Zemirot” (Songs) which are sung during Shabbat meals. Including: “Shalom Aleichem” and “Eshet Chayil” (Proverbs 31.10) which are sung Friday evening, before “Kiddush”.
