SHORT HISTORY OF MADHABS Rasulullah (s.a.w.) were receiving revelations. Ashab-i Kiram used to learn ilim personally from Rasulullah by listening the ayats and hadiths. They were enlightened with noor of ilim in the presence and assembly (majlis) of Rasulullah, so by this way, their hearts were purified, their amaal became sincere and their doubts were resolved. After the death of Rasulullah (s.a.w.) Ashab-i Kiram (alayhim al ridwan) considered the spread of Islam a vital matter and worked in this direction. So, they did not have time to write down the rules that they draw from Qur’an and the hadith as most of them were mujtahids, they were acting on their own ijtihad. Even a peasant who stayed in the majlis (assembly) of the Rasulullah (s.a.w.) for a short time began telling wisdom. After Ashab-i Kiram, and tabi‘een (those following the Ashab) the number of the Muslims and the events they had come across multiplied. Many bid‘ahs and dhalalat (heresy) emerged. Thus, it became necessary (wajeeb) for the alims of the that time to work and make ijtihads, render fatwas, draw and write rules from the Qur’an and the hadith and to establish madhabs. Those eminent scholars put every issue forward only with its evidence, every question with its answer and every difficulty with its fatwas. By this way, the madh’habs came into existence. Each madh’hab was followed by a community. Some Muslims followed Imam Ebu Hanifa, some Imam Shafi, some Imam Ahmad, some Sufyan-i Sawri, some Dawud-i Zahri and some followed the others (rahimehullah). However, during our times there are four madh’habs (Hanafi, Shafi, Maliki, Hambali) left. Those, other than the four, are deemed false. All these mujtahids, despite having differences in some issues of amaal (actions), they are unified in the issues of i’tiqad (creed of beleif). The difference of opinion between the mujtahid occured by the permission of Allah Taala. All of these imam are on the right path (hidayat). If one does his acts, marriage (niqah) and other jobs following one of these imams, this is right. He receives sawab in the Day of Judgment and he enters Jannat.
