SHORT STORY. :)) from thesibyllinebooks On the Run Leo ran as fast as he could, tearing through the woods. He’d just escaped from his fourth foster home. Leo wondered why the state kept on trying to find families for him to stay with. He didn’t want to be there any more than his foster parents wanted to have him there. Anywhere had to be better than a foster home full of six other kids who all hated him. A hidden branch sent Leo crashing to the ground. He put out his hands to brace himself from the fall. Still, he landed on his knees with a loud oof! Leo stayed on the forest floor for a while, considering how rotten his luck really could get. Then he heard fast footsteps coming in his direction. The footsteps stop, and panic grew in Leo’s chest. “Who’s there?” a voice demanded, a young girl, Leo figured. “I’m not afraid of you!” Slowly, Leo stood up, compelled to following the footsteps. Maybe this girl was running away from her family, too. Maybe they could be friends. Leo followed the girl’s voice until he could see her a few feet away. He was right. She was his age, give or take a year, and they were about the same size. Her black hair went down her back in a sloppy braid, and a too-large t-shirt bung from her skinny body. The girl brandished a golden dagger. The sun reflected off of it, nearly blinding Leo. “Don’t come any closer!” She ordered. “I’m serious!” Leo put his hands up, signaling he didn’t plan on hurting her. “Is that thing made out of gold?” He asked, noticing the dagger. The girl nodded dubiously, still pointing her weapon in Leo’s direction. “Imperial gold- wait, you can see it?” Leo nodded. “I’m not blind. I know when someone’s trying to kill me. Trust me, I’m not new to it.” The girl studied Leo closely. Her obsidian eyes unsettled him. “That’s not what I meant. You’re not supposed to be able to see my dagger.” Well, I think it would be stupid for you to threaten me with something I couldn’t see, Leo pointed out. The girl frowned. “You’re like me, aren’t you?” she asked. A runaway? Leo asked. Yeah. My foster parents sucked. They always do. The girl shook her head. “No, a demigod. Only demigods can see Imperial Gold. The Mist makes sure of that.” Leo rolled his eyes. Just his luck to run into some nuts girl with a dagger. “Mist? It’s a clear day. And demigod? There’s no such thing.” The girl nodded her head in protest. “Yes, there is. I’m one, and so is my sister. I’ve met lots of others. And there’s a place for people like us, in the west. That’s where I’m going,” she told him. Leo decided to humor her. After all, it had been two days since he’d spoken to someone. “Really? Well, where are they, and how’d you end up in Texas?” The girl got quiet, like she didn’t like the answer to Leo’s question. “My sister joined the Amazons. I’m… I’m following the wolves to camp.” Following the wolves? There were no wolves in Texas, and Leo knew that for a fact. “Okay, I tried to be nice, but you’re creeping me out. Maybe you should sell that dagger and get some meds.” I’m not crazy! The girl said fiercely. She grabbed Leo’s wrist. There’s a world out there more dangerous than this one. And you’re a part of it. You should come with me. Where I’m going is safe. Leo nodded like he understood, which he didn’t. “Yes, it’s really hard to hurt yourself in a white padded room,” he agreed. The girl clenched her jaw. She shoved Leo to the ground. He was seriously getting acquainted with the forest floor. She stomped off in the other direction. Fine, don’t believe me! But you’ll make it to Camp Jupiter eventually. Or you’ll die first! -TA Connor
