SHRADDHA OR SELF-CONFIDENCE ( in the words of Swami Vivekananda ) ( concluded ) Faith , faith , faith in ourselves , faith , faith in God --- this is the secret of greatness . If you have faith in all the three hundred & thirty millions of your mythological gods , & in all the gods which foreigners have now & again introduced into your midst , & still have no faith in yourselves , there is no salvation for you . Have faith in yourselves , & stand up on that faith & b strong ; that is what we need . Why is it that we three hundred & thirty millions of people have been ruled for the last one thousand years by any & every handful of foreigners who chose t walk over our prostrate bodies ? Because they had faith in themselves & we had not . An English boy will tell you , I m an Englishman , & I can do anything . An American boy will tell you the same thing , & so will any European boy . Can our boys say the same thing here ? No , nor even the boys fathers . We have lost faith in ourselves . Therefore t preach the Advaita aspect of the Vedanta is necessary t rouse up the hearts of men , t show them the glory of their souls . Have faith in man , whether he appears t you t b a very learned one or the most ignorant one . Have faith in man , whether he appears t b an angel or the very devil himself . Have faith in man first , & then having faith in man , believe that if there r defects in him , if he makes mistakes , if he embraces the crudest & the vilest doctrines , believe that it is not from his real nature that they come , but from the want of higher ideals . You give him the truth , & there your work is done . Let him compare it in his own mind with what he has already in him ; & , mark my words , if you have really given him the truth , the false must vanish , light must dispel darkness , & truth will bring the good out . Put the good before them , see how eagerly they take it , see how the divine that never dies , that is always living in the human , comes up awakened & stretches out its hand for all that is good , & all that is glorious .
