SINYANGWE TIES MALNUTRITION TO POOR SANITARY HEALTH PRACTICES KITWE mayor Kelvin Sinyangwe says real development cannot be attained in a community grappling with poor sanitation. Speaking when he opened the urban-led total sanitation workshop at Kitwes Sharais Guesthouse on Friday, Sinyangwe said lack of access to improved sanitation contributed to a high prevalence of water-borne diseases. Sinyangwe said poor sanitary health practices were linked to malnutrition and low quality learning environment for millions of children in urban areas. He said Nkana Water and Sewerage Company had started implementing the supply and sanitation project which would improve access to adequate and cost-effective water supply and sanitation services to the urban and peri-urban population of Kitwe, Kalulushi and Chambishi. Sinyangwe said the desire of the government was to create a good and sustainable environment for citizens with access to clean water and sanitation services. He said for the programme required input from all councillors to succeed. Once there is support, the authorised officers who are the environmental health officers that includes the officers from Nkana Water, will work with zeal without interference. Officers will be able to conduct evaluation activities such as regular follow-ups of inspections to ascertain compliance, Sinyangwe said. He said NWSC had received funding from Africa Development Bank (AfDB) for the construction and rehabilitation of water infrastructure and was promoting community-wide sanitation promotion. And Kitwe district medical officer Dr Chikafuna Banda said local authorities must endeavour to plan the cities in accordance with the town planning Act to help the medical team in its annual agenda of epidemic preparedness and prevention. Dr Banda said diseases associated with poor sanitation such as diarrhoea, typhoid, cholera and dysentery needed to be combated in an effort to creating disease-free communities. postzambia/post-read_article.php?articleId=50254
