SISTER NIVEDITA : Born Margaret Elizabeth Noble; (28 Oct 1867 – 13 Oct 1911) .....On Wednesday of the same week (July 2nd 1902), the day being Ekadasi, and himself keeping the fast in all strictness, he insisted on serving the morning meal to the same disciple. Each dish as it was offered - boiled seeds of the jack-fruit, boiled potatoes, plain rice, and ice-cold milk - formed the subject of playful chat; and finally, to end the meal, he himself poured the water over the hands, and dried them with a towel. It is I who should do these things for you Swamiji! Not you, for me! was the protest naturally offered. But his answer was startling in its solemnity - Jesus washed the feet of His disciples! Something checked the answer But that was the last time! as it rose to the lips, and the words remained unuttered. This was well. For here also, the last time had come. - Source: The Master as I Saw Him - By Sister Nivedita ......In the afternoon of 5 July, Swami Vivekanandas body was taken for cremation. Vivekanandas body was wrapped with a saffron cloth. Nivedita wished to take a small portion of that cloth so that she could send it as a memento to Josephine MacLeod. Understanding the mind of Nivedita Swami Saradananda asked her to cut a small portion of the Swamis cloth. But, Nivedita was unsure whether the act would be proper or not and decided not to take it. When Vivekanandas body was being cremated she sat all the while looking at the burning pyre. Around six oclock in the evening the burning flame was about to go out. Suddenly Nivedita felt somebody had pulled her sleeve. She turned around and found a small piece of saffron cloth which had somehow come out of the pyre during cremation. Nivedita lifted it and took it considering it as a blessing of the Swami. - Source: Nivedita of India Why did I not understand that it was quite enough to be a little child at your dear feet?
