SKIN CARE / SUN CARE. Basic skin type is determined by genetic disposition and will usually have become apparent by the age of 12 or 13. But it can also be influenced by a range of other factors too, including diet, environment, stress threshold, how well we digest and absorb our food and the cosmetics and skin-care products we use. Skin condition is affected by illness, fluctuating hormone levels, changes in the weather, lack of exercise, anxiety and trauma and , most times - although not always - by age. Most people know their skin type, but if you are unsure the following pointers should help. Dry Skin? * Flaky patches * Chaps easily * Feel tight, especially across the cheeks, forehead and chin * Prone to itching and irritation Dryness is exacerbated by exposure to detergents, central heating,air-conditioning systems, smoky, polluted atmospheres, inadequate skin care, poor diet and overexposure to the sun. Check your current cleanser, moisturizer and night cream. Are they right for your skin type or could they be too drying or not moisturizing enough? Given proper attention and the right internal and external care, dry skin can be encouraged to retain more moisture. Never leave the skin unprotected. After cleansing with a creamy or milky lotion or oil, wipe away any excess with a damp cotton pad, rinse with tepid water, pat dry (use rosewater or orange flower water - more gentle than a regular toner) and, immediately, apply moisturizer. Water itself wont dehydrate the skin, but inadequate rinsing of soap can leave it feeling tight and dry. So rinse really thoroughly. A water splash (repeat it over and over, at least 20 times) help to improve circulation and encourages the moisturizer, when you apply it after the splash, to be absorbed more efficiently into the skins surface. Diet-wise for Drys Drink lots of filtered water. Increase your intake of cold-pressed salad oils. Use extra virgin olive oil as your main cooking oil for savoury dishes. Snack on sunflowers and pumpkin seeds, almonds and Brazil nuts. Eat oily fish regularly and add a daily supplement of Bio-cares Mega GLA or Pharma Nord Bio-Glandin. A Real Treat. Try Jurlique Aromatic Hydrating Concentrate. Expensive to buy but lasts ages. Just 2 or 3 drops in a bowl of warm water morning and evening. Soak a wash cloth and then press the cloth gently but firmly to the face and neck; press and release 10 times. (Hot warm water remove dirt and cleanse deeply) Rinse with cold ice water to supple up your skin. Water into your hands and splash your face and neck repeatedly. Also available for sensitive skins.
