SLAMABAD: The Islamabad police have arrested a total of 9,878 beggars during the current year and registered FIRs against them and their handlers. According to a police spokesman, the Islamabad police have accelerated the efforts to curb this practice on the directions of Islamabad IG Sikandar Hayat and Islamabad SSP Muhammad Rizwan. He said special squads had been constituted to assist the police in the City Zone, Saddar Zone, Industrial Zone and rural areas of the capital. The spokesman said during the current year, a total of 9,878 professional beggars were arrested. Out of a total of 2,214 professional male beggars, challans of 1,202 were presented before courts, while 1,012 were shifted to the Edhi Home. Out of a total of 1,230 female beggars, challans of 874 were presented before courts and 356 were shifted to the Edhi Home. A total of 2,001 male child beggars were shifted to the Child Protection Centre and 1,023 to the Edhi Home. A total of 2,505 female child beggars were shifted to the Edhi Home and five were shifted to the Child Protection Centre. Beggary is an organised crime as gangs pick up children from remote areas after paying some amount to their poor parents and take them to different cities on the pretext of providing respectable jobs. Sikandar Hayat and Muhammad Rizwan said the authorities would curb this social evil and those backing the professional beggars would be dealt with an iron hand. They said the needy women and children had been shifted to various centres after verification so that they could be made responsible citizens. The SSP said the campaign against the professional beggary would continue and strict action would be taken against those who force women and children into this business. app(dailytimes)
