SMARTNET OFFERS 100% SPONSORSHIP TO UNZA STUDENT SMARTNET Networks Limited (SNT) has offered 100 per cent sponsorship to first-year UNZA student Lukonde Chitula, who was denied government scholarship. SNT chief executive officer, Bwalya Kasenge, said the company, which deals in IT products, decided to help sponsor Chitula’s tertiary education because of the outstanding results he obtained at grade 12. “This is a company owned by two Zambians and for us, education is very important. And the help we have offered to this smart young man is part of our corporate responsibility,” he said. “We offer help in various sectors of society but our main emphasis is education for the vulnerable in society because we know that once they are educated, they will become independent and be able also to help the next person.” Kasenge, however, warned Chitula that SNT’s sponsorship would be on performance basis adding that once he fails to clear any of his subjects, the company would withdraw sponsorship. “We do not support people who fail. So in a case where he might fail and want to repeat, we usually withdraw sponsorship because we want to encourage the people we sponsor to work extra hard at school,” he added. Kasenge urged the corporate sector to support vulnerable students who were unable to sponsor their tertiary education as government alone could not manage. “We will sponsor your school fees throughout your stay at UNZA but we advise you to fend for your own accommodation and other logistics,” Kasenge told Chitula. And Chitula thanked SNT for the gesture. He promised not to be a disappointment to the company. “I have really run short of words, I do not know how to express my gratitude to you but I promise you that I will continue to be outstanding in my performances while at UNZA,” said Chitula. Chitula, who completed school last year with six points, is among thousands of first year UNZA students who have been left out of government bursary. postzambia/news.php?id=3110
