SMILE may seem innocuous on the surface, but its really a dark satire of beauty pageants and the crushing reality of suburban angst. Bruce Dern is great as the always optimistic car dealer Big Bob (Sometimes, expect less from life he expounds in a rare moment of truth) and director Michael Ritchie (with cinematography by the great Conrad Hall) paint a pretty little portrait that is rotten right beneath the surface.
