SMITH THROWS COMPLETE GAME LEADING IKAIKA TO 3-2 VICTORY WAILUKU, Maui, Hawaii- It was another nail biter at Ichiro “Iron” Maehara Baseball Stadium tonight. Both the Na Koa Ikaika and Santa Rosa Rosebud teams battled back and forth for the win. No runs were scored until a Na Koa Ikaika run in the 4th inning from a Brendon Gregorich RBI. Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard again until the 6th inning. During the top of the 6th inning, Rosebuds’ Robbie Wright came up big with a RBI, putting the Rosebuds on the scoreboard. Na Koa Ikaika took the lead back over in their next round of at bats with a DJ Dixon RBI. The inning shortly ended after, as Dixon got thrown out while trying to reach 2nd base. The Rosebuds came back swinging in the 7th inning. After a pair of base hits from Brian Budd and Joe Wittig, Mike Caporale came to the plate. While Caporale was up to bat, Budd was able to steal home, tying the game 2-2. After Caporale struckout and Wittig got caught stealing, Na Koa Ikaika pitcher, Jesse Smith got out of the inning with just one run being added to the scoreboard. With the bases loaded and only one out, Ikaika was hopeful to get a lead in the 7th. With Chema Sanchez and Waylen Sing Chow on 2nd and 3rd bases, however, the Ikaika offense was unable to bring the men around to score. After hitting Brendon Gregorich in the bottom of the 8th, Rosebuds’ starting pitcher, Tuck Mommsen, was replaced by 3rd baseman Wittig. Mommsen took over Wittig’s spot at 3rd Base. Mommsen let up 6 hits for 2 runs on the night. After a wild pitch on the 3rd strike to Valdez, Gregorich was able to reach 3rd base. After Dixon struckout, Maui looked to Kalaika Kahoohalahala to drive in a run that would give Ikaika the lead. With a short popup to centerfield, the Santa Rosa centerfielder, VJ Ambroselli, crushed the hope of Maui taking the lead going into the 9th inning. Ikaika’s starting pitcher, Smith, returned to the mound for the 9th inning. After hitting Rosebuds’ catcher, Wright, Smith struck out Jerred Dumont and Budd back to back. After allowing Wittig to reach first, Smith was left to face Llyon. With a ball hit to centerfield, Sing Chow caught it to end the Rosebud’s big chance at scoring a run. After a strikeout, Rosebuds’ Wittig hit Sing Chow, advancing him to 1st base. After another strikeout, Serrano stepped to the plate. After what turned out to be a very important stolen base from Sing Chow, Serrano had a base hit to shortstop Sammy Bruno that ended in a wild throw to 1st base. Sing Chow was able to score, ending the game in walk-off fashion with a 3-2 victory. Ikaika pitcher, Jesse Smith threw 9 innings with 2 runs and 3 hits for the night. With nine strikeouts, the Lincoln, Nebraska native led Ikaika to a victory, completing a sweep over the Santa Rosa Rosebuds. Na Koa Ikaika improves to 15-6 on the season. Ikaika returns to Ichiro “Iron” Maehara Baseball Stadium tomorrow evening, with first pitch set for 5:30, as they take on the East Bay Lumberjacks.
