SMRT staff at Bedok MRT station reported a water leak from the ceiling of the underpass near Exit B at 2pm this afternoon. SMRT’s maintenance team was immediately sent on site to look into the matter. On-site investigations reveal that the pipe of a sump pit that collects drainage water along the underpass to be channeled out of the station along the ceiling via sump pumps have leaked. Our maintenance team are currently working to mitigate the situation by redirecting the flow from the leaking pipe to another channel to stop the overflow. As we are currently experiencing wet weather, we are unable to shut down the sump pumps as it will cause the sump pit to flood and overflow, which will result in ponding in the underpass. Our maintenance team will be rectifying the situation after passenger service hours tonight at 12.30am. As a safety precaution, a portion of the underpass walkway has been cordoned off to redirect passengers away from the wet floor when walking to the other side of the interchange. As of 7.58pm, maintenance staff have managed to contain the leaking area and passenger traffic is smooth. SMRT staff are also deployed at the location to provide assistance to passengers. We clarify that while there is a slight unpleasant odour, there is no spillage from the toilets.
