SNOW, SLEET AND BITTER WINDS... BRACE FOR FREEZING TEMPERATURES... WINTER IS HERE! Good afternoon, well winter has finally arrived, and with a vengeance. As I write a bitterly cold southerly blast is making landfall in the far south, and is set to hit Canterbury within the next 12 hours. What do you need to know, will you be affected? Read on to find out! -- Based on current model data showers will begin affect Banks Peninsula in the early hours of tomorrow morning, initially falling as snow to 300-400m. -- During the afternoon (after 3pm) winds tilt more SSW meaning that more shower activity will be pushed onshore. -- As the winds tilt SSW, the snow level will drop to about 100m, and possibly to sea level, yes this does include Christchurch city. -- Winds are likely to be strong and gusty for much of tomorrow and Tuesday in most coastal areas. --Temperatures will not get any higher that 5deg tomorrow, and drop significantly as the main cold air pool arrives. -- The main areas affected will be coastal areas from Ashburton northward, although towns across the Canterbury Plains such as Darfield and Oxford may still see some activity. -- Areas in South Canterbury may well see a very cold, but clear day tomorrow, and Tuesday for that matter. -- Areas in North Canterbury will also see snow, especially areas such as Hanmer, as well as the coastal hills. -- At this stage the snow level looks to retreat upwards during Tuesday afternoon. ___________________________________________________________ AMOUNTS: There is still some uncertainty about snow fall amounts, and at this stage we dont expect them to be majorly disruptive, although the wind and temperatures, along with heavy snow may cause stress to livestock. Above 600m: 20-25cm is possible Above 400m: 15-20cm is possible Above 200m: 10-15cm is possible At lower levels: 10cm is possible. It is also worth noting that for much of tomorrow, Banks Peninsula be affected, but Christchurch may be clear. It is not until mid afternoon it moves further inland, and therefore Banks Peninsula is most exposed to this initially. Thats all for now, Michael will be back by 8pm with full details as more information comes to hand! Stay warm!! -Josh
