SNP lie-buster: Been out campaigning today and had a few folk say Im voting Yes because we give far more money to Westminster than we get back. Is this still doing the rounds?? To clarify REALLY simply: 1) Scotland receives somewhere between £1,000-1500 per person more than the UK average. This is normal and reflects our sparse geography and bigger public sector and has long been the case. Yes, the UK intentionally pays Scotland more. 2) Scotland also pays the UK more in oil revenues- as it happens, this figure has been a very similar £1,000-1,500 per person over the past five years - emphasis on the past five years, when oil revenues have been particularly high as this famous diagram shows - a lot of this is because of the Arab spring and no realistic commentator thinks revenues will stay anywhere near this high - and thats before you even consider that reserves are running out - news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/73184000/gif/_73184641_oil_and_gas_revenue_624.gif 3) And this ALL happens under the status quo - i.e. when we have: - interest rates kept lower by having the Bank of England - thousands of jobs in UK tax, defence, civil service etc. based in Scotland - no start up costs - no trade-inhibiting costs that would exist if we had a border and different currency - UK subsidies for medical and other research, renewables, north sea oil decommissioning and many, many other areas I respect anyone who is voting Yes or No - but the lies have to be challenged.
