SO SAD TO SEE THIS ONE HAPPENING ON A PATRIOT. How do you pack for a one-way trip to hell? That’s what Thérèse Betoukoumessou asked herself Monday morning as she quickly assembled some of her husband’s belongings into a suitcase he could take with him when he gets deported. New shoes, she thought, and slimmer pants because he had lost so much weight in detention. Her husband, Prince Debase Betoukoumessou, was detained by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) in April and was slated Monday to be sent back to the Democratic Republic of Congo — a country where he fears for his life. Canada has had a moratorium on deportations to the DRC for decades, but Betoukoumessou is being sent to a land he hasn’t seen in 16 years anyway. Thérèse and her six children were informed that they would be allowed to see him one last time before his scheduled 6 p.m. departure and dutifully arrived, suitcase in tow, at Pearson airport where they were buzzed through a nondescript grey metal door to bid farewell to their father.
