SO WHY BLIZZARD WARNINGS TO OUR NORTH AND NOT HERE IN FAR SOUTH - TopicsExpress

SO WHY BLIZZARD WARNINGS TO OUR NORTH AND NOT HERE IN FAR SOUTH JERSEY? Lots of you are asking this very question. And the answer has to do with the definition of a blizzard, which is often misunderstood. It is not just copious amounts of heavy snow by itself, which is the public perception of the term. Rather, a blizzard has to meet ALL of the following criteria: 1) Persistent snow and/or blowing snow 2) Reducing visibility to 1/4 mile or less 3) Frequent wind gusts in excess of 35mph 4) Sustained for a period of time 3 hours or longer Its not that we wont see occasional blizzard conditions here in far South Jersey, especially Atlantic county. But its less likely to be as frequent as folks from Ocean and Monmouth county northeast through Southern New England. Thats where the blizzard warnings have the best chances of verifying and the blizzard conditions have a better chances to persist. Those areas will be closer to the center of the intensifying storm, and will be under the heavier snow bands for a longer period of time. So a major snow for much of South Jersey, a historic snow and yes, perhaps blizzard, from LBI on north and east. More in a bit...
