SOMEONE PLEASE READ THIS. please do something. Frankly, I dont care who. Because apparently, the protesting in student groups and angry letters dont mean a thing from the students who are actually the ones suffering at the hands of those who were entrusted with representing their interests. The Burroughs Child Development Center, the daycare center at my school, is being closed due to lack of funding. Lack of funding because not only was our funding cut because my school chose to educate their students on LGBT issues (not opinionated either way, just pure information), but because the Governor, Nikki Haley, approved of measures to force my school to spend an equal amount of money to that which had been spent on turning their students into perverts by exposing to them to reading materials about the LGBT experience in modern society (words from a SC house representative) on real American values... you know, democracy, The Constitution, biblical origins, etc. Im so sick I could throw up. I am jumping ship on this state as soon as I get the chance. About our education in this state. IT SUCKS. IT FLAT OUT SUCKS. According to the NEA, SC was one of the states with the highest public school enrollment decreases. In fact, we were last. We consistently land in the top half of states with an increasing number of students, but always land in the lower half for school districts and facilities to accommodate those increasing numbers. All I can say is, congrats for being at the very bottom of the top half of states for graduates from public high schools. Which means jack shit since most of the state with any money at all sends their children to private schools or out of state. Average attendance for students lands in the first half of the academic year but drops significantly after that. Makes total sense, given that the dropout rate here is so high. My university has the most rapidly growing student population and yet is the most significantly underfunded university in the state, perhaps because it caters to non-traditional students... like MYSELF (I am non-traditional as well, after I was chased away by administration from the high and mighty Wofford College because I became pregnant. Literally told by a dean not to go back, despite the fact that I had worked my ass off to be there on a FULL SCHOLARSHIP). You know what SC? Cool. Just cool. Good to know that our state representatives are hell-bent on creating uninformed college graduates by punishing and under-funding their educational facilities. Congrats on so many consecutive listings on Wall Streets worst states for education. Wonder why that is? Burroughs Child Development Center was an amazing facility for young children. it provided a remarkably high level curriculum for children of parents who frankly werent top tier income earners. The staff there worked very hard and actually cared. I toured a number of day cares in Spartanburg and no others even came close. You want to increase the education standards in SC? Start off by investing in the future. Not taking us backwards. Im SO ashamed of our representatives and our governor right now. Nikki Haley, as a mixed race woman, you should really know the kind of oppression that legal discrimination creates, flat-out or institutional. I know I faced hardships throughout my academic career as a result of my gender and race. The fact that you have chosen to PENALIZE my school, University of South Carolina Upstate, for shedding light on an oppressed group in modern society, the LGBT community, after Asian-Americans and women suffered in the hands of discrimination in the past, is repulsive. I really thought that equality would be a little closer to your heart.
