SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT – EVOLUTION (PART 2) “Evolution is a fairy tale for grown-ups. This theory has helped nothing in the progress of science. It is useless.” - PROFESSOR LOUIS BOUNOURE, DIRECTOR, NATIONAL CENTER OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH “Where did Cain get his wife?” Many ask this question thinking they’ve found a “mistake” in the Bible—that there must have been other people besides Adam and Eve. However, Scripture tells us that Adam is “the first man” (1 Corinthians 15:45); that there were no other humans when he was created, because God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18); and that Eve is “the mother of all living” (Genesis 3:20). Cain and Abel, then, must have married their sisters. All of the first-generation siblings married each other in order to populate the earth. At that time there was no law against incest. But as the population grew large enough, and as the risk of genetic problems increased due to sin’s curse, God outlawed marriage between immediate family members. MAN’S DOMINION The Bible tells us that animals are created “without understanding” (Psalm 32:9), and that human beings are different from animals. We are made in God’s “image.” As human beings, we are aware of our “being.” God is “I AM,” and we know that “we are.” We have understanding that we exist. Among other unique characteristics, we have an innate ability to appreciate God’s creation. What animal gazes with awe at a sunset, or at the magnificence of the Grand Canyon? What animal obtains joy from the sounds of music or takes the time to form itself into an orchestra to create music? What animal among the beasts sets up court systems and apportions justice to its fellow creatures? We are moral beings. While birds and other creatures have instincts to create (nests, etc.), we have the ability to uncover the hidden laws of electricity. We can utilize the law of aerodynamics to transport ourselves around the globe. We also have the God-given ability to appreciate the value of creation. We unearth the hidden treasures of gold, silver, diamonds, and oil and make use of them for our own benefit. Only humans have the unique ability to appreciate God for this incredible creation and to respond to His love. No, man is not just an animal on the evolutionary food chain. God has given him dominion (authority) over all the animals (Genesis 1:28). Man is intellectually superior to them and has priority over them—every animal is “under his feet” and may be brought into submission by him (James 3:7). Birds (parrots) can be taught to speak. With a crack of a whip, lions will do what he says. Even killer whales obey his voice. Man’s dominion is obvious. Cows yield milk for his cereal, cheese for his hamburger, butter for his bread, yogurt to keep him healthy, and ice cream to delight his taste buds on hot days. The same cow gives him meat to keep him strong and leather to keep him warm. Sheep and goats also yield many of these same products. The chicken makes eggs for his breakfast and provides finger-licking meat for his dinner. The sea overflows with an incredible variety of fish for him to catch and eat. Dogs protect his property and herd his sheep. Elephants lift great weights for him. Camels carry him across deserts. The horse is perfectly designed to be ridden by him. Man is the pinnacle of God’s earthly creation. He is not a mere part of the evolutionary process having to yield to the rights of animals. Jesus said that mankind is “much better” than birds and sheep (Matthew 12:12). He is to subdue the earth and bring its vast resources into submission. All were created for him by the infinite genius and loving hand of Almighty God. Even evolutionist Stephen Hawking, considered the best-known scientist since Albert Einstein, acknowledges, “The universe and the laws of physics seem to have been specifically designed for us. If any one of about 40 physical qualities had more than slightly different values, life as we know it could not exist: Either atoms would not be stable, or they wouldn’t combine into molecules, or the stars wouldn’t form the heavier elements, or the universe would collapse before life could develop, and so on” (Austin American-Statesman, October 19, 1997). In A Brief History of Time, Hawking wrote, “It would be very difficult to explain why the universe should have begun in just this way, except as the act of a God who intended to create beings like us.” John Wheeler, Princeton University professor of physics, agrees: “Slight variations in physical laws such as gravity or electromagnetism would make life impossible … The necessity to produce life lies at the center of the universe’s whole machinery and design” (Reader’s Digest, Sept. 1986). LAW OF PROBABILITIES REFUTES EVOLUTION Evolutionists have been unable to answer the question of how life spontaneously arose from dead matter. Sir Fred Hoyle, professor of astronomy at Cambridge University, said of evolution, “The chance that higher life forms might have emerged in this way is comparable to the chance that a tornado sweeping through a junkyard might assemble a Boeing 747 from the materials therein.” This famous statistician puts it in perspective for us: “The likelihood of the formation of life from inanimate matter is one out of 10 (to the 40,000 power) … It is big enough to bury Darwin and the whole theory of evolution. There was no primeval soup, neither on this planet nor on any other, and if the beginnings of life were not random, they must therefore have been the product of purposeful intelligence” (Evolution from Space). Despite being a supporter of evolution, biochemistry professor Michael J. Behe confesses its improbability: “I believe that Darwin’s mechanism for evolution doesn’t explain much of what is seen under a microscope. Cells are simply too complex to have evolved randomly. Intelligence was required to produce them.” EARTH’S POPULATION REFUTES EVOLUTION Grant R. Jeffery writes in The Signature of God: “The evolutionary scientists who believe that man existed for over a million years have an almost insurmountable problem. Using the assumption of forty-three years for an average human generation, the population growth over a million years would produce 23,256 consecutive generations. We calculate the expected population by starting with one couple one million years ago and use the same assumptions of a forty-three-year generation and 2.5 children per family … The evolutionary theory of a million years of growth would produce trillions × trillions × trillions × trillions of people that should be alive today on our planet. To put this in perspective, this number is vastly greater than the total number of atoms in our vast universe. If mankind had lived on earth for a million years, we would all be standing on enormously high mountains of bones from the trillions of skeletons of those who had died in past generations. However, despite the tremendous archeological and scientific investigation in the last two centuries, the scientists have not found a fraction of the trillions of skeletons predicted by the theory of evolutionary scientists.” Have a blessed day!
