SONG FOR MARION (2012) Starring Terence Stamp, Vanessa Redgrave and Gemma Arterton How do you deal with watching the love of your life leave you? How do you learn to cope when he or she is no longer around? Will the heartbreak ever go away? Marion Harris, who has been struggling with illness for some years now, takes part in a senior citizens choir in her neighbourhood. She is very popular, gregarious and makes friends easily. Her husband, Arthur, on the other hand, is almost a recluse and gruff. He can barely speak to their son James. But Arthur is unquestionably devoted to Marion, even if he dislikes her activities at the choir and can’t get along with her choir mates. One day, Marion collapses during choir practice and learns that her cancer has come back, and nothing could be done to stop it this time. So Arthur and Marion return home to deal with the inevitable... But meanwhile, Marion still actively participates in the choir and pulls Arthur along, hoping to give him something to hold on to after she goes. One night, Marion passes, right next to Arthur in bed. And Arthur’s world crumbles. He then isolates himself, even from James, unable to deal with the aftermath of Marion’s death. But he finds himself drawn to Marion’s choir, and joins them, probably as a way of keeping his promise to Marion to continue living his life. This is a beautiful and moving movie about love, dealing with loss and the healing power of music. And there are many, many beautiful scenes in the movie. And one of my favourite is this rendition of Cindy Lauper’s “True Colours”. Enjoy...
