[SONG OF THE DAY] Have been hearing this song for quite a while - TopicsExpress

[SONG OF THE DAY] Have been hearing this song for quite a while recently, but never really paid attention to the lyrics and the messages to be delivered. I am now totally into the song after checking the MV tonight. People keep complaining pop songs are like rubbish and some are detesting/degrading pop music just to show they have certain classy taste in music (Ive always have some doubts in so-called indie music; for me, the term indie is commodified in a way, totally going off track of its original spirit!). You cant hate something because its catchy :P Just a few thoughts: 1) The characters in the MV are almost all people from the marginal in the society (the little boy, not sure if hes Native American, and his apparently short-tempered dad caught my attention right from the beginning of the video) 2) Spivak asked the well-known question Can the Subaltern Speak?, and for a long time the question has been open to debates for scholars in postcolonial-, subaltern-, and probably ethnic studies. But its interesting for me that what the video shows us is the possibility of not listen as an alternative of resistance/subversion. Cool! 3) Ah, is that a little boy or a little girl? If its a little boy, what will be changed or how our reading of the video could be reshaped when the boy is replaced with a little girl? (the women in the video are kinda scary btw Orz) 4) I like the scene when the little boy gave some coins to a vendor to buy a heart and it is put into the pale-faced old mans pocket near his chest. Can we buy a heart? Is there any power structure between the man who holds and gives out the bloody heart and the man who takes it quite passively? How do we make sense of the little boys role in this exchange?
