SONG OF THE DAY: Sublime - New Song --- Great summer song on the surface, fun to listen to in the late afternoon/early evening, a soundtrack to hanging out an relaxing with friends, although a quick listen to the lyrics reveals a really sad insight into Bradleys frame of mind, especially in hindsight knowing what ultimately became of him. That self-awareness is something Ive always loved in musicians, and I also have a lot of interest in songs like this one that take on a new level of meaning down the line several years after their recording....we were talking about this in reference to John Lennons Imagine last week - how that song has a message that still resonates, but it also has taken on a bittersweet context in the years since Lennons death. When New Song was released, it was a glimpse into Nowells mind, a confession of one of his major flaws...but after he died, the song suddenly seems full of foreshadowing and tragic inevitability. To me, unforeseen circumstance is the brick and mortar that builds legend around certain songs...New Song is maybe one of the less heralded Sublime songs, but to me it has become one of the more important ones, in terms of really getting to the core of who they were, both as musicians and as individuals. https://youtube/watch?v=E6GeAJCl7eM
