SOS TO PUBLIC INTEREST LAWYERS. I humbly appeal on behalf of the 44 innocent students of University of Uyo currently standing trial at the Akwa Ibom State High Court, Uyo, on felonious charges of murder, arson, rioting and assault in connection with the students demonstration in the institution on June 12, 2013 against oppressive policies. At the last adjourned date, the trial judge, Hon. Justice Joy Unwana, had directed all the accused persons/students to apply for extension of their bail or risk have same revoked on the next adjourned date ( Wednesday 12 March, 2014). As at today, some of the students are yet to apply for extension of their bail owing to financial constraint. They cannot meet the fees being demanded by lawyers. These students spent months in prison over what they no nothing about. The decision to put them on trial is simply to cover the leadership failure of the authorities. Parents of these poor students have resorted to selling off properties to meet the financial demands of lawyers. While we continue to pressurise the authorities to discontinue with this farcical trial, we appeal to Public Interest Lawyers to come to the rescue of the UNIUYO 44 by offering them pro bono services. The most urgent being the application for extension of their bail. They must not return to prison. We equally appeal to Public Interest Lawyers to put up appearance in court next week Wednesday March 12, for the UNIUYO 44 when the trial proper is expected to commence. Many of the students have no legal representation. Signed: Comrade Inibehe Effiong Esq (Lead Campaigner of the Free UNIUYO 44 Campaign). 07050470625/08065142135. inibehe.effiong@yahoo
