SOUTHERN INDIAN OCEAN - Tropical Cyclone Bansi has formed in the Southern Indian Ocean,and triggered 2 alerts. A tropical cyclone warning class I is in force at Mauritius, and a Yellow alert (pre-alert) is in effect for La Reunion Island. At 0900 UTC (4 a.m. EST) Tropical cyclone Bansi (formerly System 92S) was located near 16.3 south latitude and 54.7 east longitude, about 254 nautical miles north of St Denis, La Reunion Island. It is slowly moving to the east-southeast (at 3 knots). Maximum sustained winds are near 35 knots (40 mph/62 kph). Bansi formed north of La Reunion, and is forecast to continue moving to the east-southeast while strengthening to hurricane-force (80 knots). NASAs Terra satellite passed over Bansi today at 18:50 UTC (1:50 p.m. EST) and captured this infrared image which shows the coldest, highest thunderstorms (red) around the western quadrant of the center.
