SPB Impressions - Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Part One). ~ Wes - TopicsExpress

SPB Impressions - Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Part One). ~ Wes ~ The anticipation whilst waiting for Smash Bros for Wii U was off the chart - the tease that was the small screen, multiplayer madness of the 3DS version (albeit my favourite 3DS title of the year), and the excitement of watching live tournaments play out at numerous events throughout the year. The atmosphere whilst watching battles play out on the (ridiculously) large screen was electric. I never got through to play this way myself, but knew I had to play it on my own big screen as soon as possible. And so the game arrived and straight into four player match ups I went. Seeing it close up confirmed the quality of the high def visuals; the large number of character models, animations and locations are truly a sight to behold. The action is fast and frantic, never slowing down even with 8 fighters - a truly next-gen feature that cant be beaten when it comes to multi-player competitive fun. And then we have amiibo. The range of game modes in this game offer plenty to do - check out special orders and event mode for challenges that encourage you to play as different characters - a must if you want to experience everything this game has to offer. But amiibo adds something else - a new found addiction to training up a fighting partner whos got your back. Level it up, customise it with improved stats and then take it to your friends and watch as they take it on. Then bring it home and revel in the trophies and further customisations it gives you. Love it. And I cant wait to get more of them. I probably wont ever get all the trophies in this game, I doubt Ill ever beat any of the hard events and I dont expect Ill even beat classic mode on anything more intense than about difficultly level 6 (master core is nuts!). 8 player match ups, with my team of amiibo on my side, and the potential for different tournaments at future SPB events means Im going to need to keep on practising and have fun trying though. ~ Reuben ~ Smash … On Wii U … Is it any good? Firstly, it looks incredible. The step up from Brawl is considerable. The gorgeous character models, amazingly in-depth fighting areas and very crisply designed menus are all completely stunning. It feels, more so than it’s smaller twin, like this is the way that Smash 4 is supposed to look. Mario, Link, Kirby and the others have never looked this good. Secondly, and my personal favourite thing, the music. There are SO MANY TRACKS in this game, and almost every single one is gold. I won’t lie, I spent a good half an hour when I first started up the game listening to all the tracks before setting which ones I wanted to hear in each stage. The fact that, on top of the amazing songs available at the starts there are a couple of hundred additional ones to get makes this game’s soundtrack a pretty solid reason to buy the game. Thirdly, it plays beautifully. The smooth frame-rate of the gameplay and minimal slowdown, even in 8-Player Smash, makes this game a pleasing experience. The additional Smash Tour mode is great fun in local multiplayer and, speaking of 8-Player Smash, that mode is absolutely brilliant. There’s a new version of Classic mode and the Multi-Man Smash and Home-Run Contest modes have returned. The depth added by the other games modes and, of course, the trophies just adds to the longevity of an already robust multi-player experience. Now for my gripes with Smash for Wii U, there is way too much content for someone like me that will only really play it in a multi-player context. I have had the game over a week and I still have not unlocked all the characters. I actually prefer the handheld iteration; I have never been one to fawn too much over pretty graphics and Smash for 3DS does exactly what I need and is portable. I understand that these are very personal gripes though. Overall, based on what I have played, there are few reasons not to buy this game. The only people that I would suggest to not buy it would be those that are more than happy with their 3DS version. This game is incredible, but I just feel that I have been spoiled by Smash for 3DS.
