SPORT: OAU PREPARES TO HOST AND WIN NUGA GAME As the obafemi awolowo university prepares for the hosting of the 24th Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA), the vice chancellor of the institution professor Bamitale Omole has assured Nigerians that the institutions mission is not just to host the game, but to win as well. With the level of the preparation on ground now, it seems the six months strike action embarked by university lecturers recently has given the university the opportunity to put a lot of infrastructural amenities needed for the games ready. Osun state correspondent, Adeniyi Folorunso, reports that despite series of postponements all now appears to set for the take off of the 24th NUGA games which will hold between the twenth and twenty-second of this month at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, south west Nigeria. Obafemi Awolowo University was awarded the right to host the 24th Nigeria Universities Games in 2012 and this will be the third time the university would host the game. But the games suffered two postponements due to the non-readiness of the major facilities and the protracted university lecturers strike. Most of the facilities such as an Olympic size swimming pool, an eight-lane tartan track, football pitches, basketball, tennis, badminton, volleyball and handball courts are ready for the games. But, Finishing touches are also being put on other facilities and structures. The Vice chancellor of the university, Bamitale Omole said OAU is set to host the best NUGA games since its inception in 1966 and promise to win the most gold. For the studentsts it is time to drop the books and lace the boots. Apart from the athletes, another four hundred students have been selected as volunteers while the rest are to vacate the campus for the games. About seven thousand student-athletes from 60 Nigerian Universities will vie for medals in 16 events and obafemi Awolowo university is hosting the games for the third time .
