SPORTS Monument Valley volleyball tournament set for this weekend By Quentin Jodie Navajo Times The 2014 Kayenta Township Mustang Volleyball Invitational begins Friday at Monument Valley High School. Six area schools will be featured in this year’s tournament headed by the host team, Monument Valley. The other teams competing include Page, Ganado, Winslow, Tuba City and Pinon. Pool action starts on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at both the old gym and the Student Activity Center. Based on Friday’s pool play action all the teams will be seeded for Saturday’s double-elimination bracket. The championship match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday with an “if necessary” game taking place right after. Also in sports, the Albuquerque Academy Invitational cross-country meet will take place on Friday afternoon. Some of the notable programs from the area that are participating include Gallup, Miyamura and Laguna-Acoma. The boys varsity race begins at 3 p.m. and the girls at 3:30 p.m. The Gallup girls are coming off a third place finish at the Four Corners meet in Flagstaff and should be one of the top contenders at this race. In the boys division, Patriot runner Niles Thomas will be gunning for his fourth straight individual title. Earlier this year the Miyamura junior seized top honors at the UNM, Miyamura and Shiprock Invitational. In Arizona, some of the area’s top schools will take part of the Doug Conley Invitational at the Rolling Hills Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., with six races on tap starting with the junior varsity boys starting at 8 a.m., followed by the junior varsity girls at 8:30 a.m., varsity girls at 9 a.m., varsity boys at 9:30 a.m., the boys elite at 10 a.m. and the girls elite at 10:30 a.m. The teams entered included Chinle, Coconino, Ganado, Holbrook, Hopi, Page, Tuba City and Winslow. Page senior Jeffrey Miller and Tuba City’s Albert Fuller are among the top contenders to win this year’s individual crown.
