SRC/ARCH River Paddle event gets record attendance Participants prepare for their tour of the Salmon Falls River — history and conservation stories included! Strafford Rivers Conservancy Board member Nancy Carmer watched, openmouthed, as kayakers and canoeists by the dozens filed toward the Salmon Falls boat launch in Rollinsford, NH. All were heading for the river to participate in this year’s “River Paddle” event, co-sponsored by the Association for Rollinsford Culture and History and the SRC, held Sunday, August 3. Carmer noted that the event has been held in past summers, but this year’s event brought out boaters in record numbers, possibly from some combination of enhanced pre-publicity, a classically beautiful New England summer day, and the opportunity to get some exercise combined with a history/conservation lesson. SRC’s Carmer and longtime ARCH Board member Lucy Putnam led the excursion. Putnam, who is Rollinsford’s resident history expert, talked about the history of the river and the structures along it. Carmer, who has served on the SRC Board of Directors for more than 25 years, spoke about conservation efforts and several of the easements along the river. Carmer was, in particular, pointing out SRC’s 88-acre Scoutland easement — with its 3,000 feet of frontage along the Salmon Falls. Kevin McEneaney, former president of the SRC and current treasurer, was registering attendees for the event and helping them haul their watercraft to the launch site. By the time there were 39 boats on the river, McEneaney said, “Lucy and Nancy are going to need bullhorns so that everyone can hear!” In the end, more than 45 people participated in the day’s event. “It was a great day,” Carmer said. “We had record attendance, beautiful weather, and great conditions on the river.”
