SRINAGAR: There was no face off between the Army and the Police as reported by media over “illegal felling” of an unknown number of green conifer trees in Kashmir’s northern district of Kupwara, a police spokesman said on Wednesday. “There was a report in some sections of the media about Police intercepting a vehicle of TA (Territorial Army) carrying timber. The case is being investigated by Kupwara police,” a police statement said. “However, the report is not fully true as there was no face off between the Army and the Police.” The Hindu newspaper had reported that the Army and the Police came close to a clash when Deputy Superintendent of Police Sajjad Khaliq and Station House Officer Inspector Gazanfar Hussain intercepted a convoy of Territorial Army at Heeri, 6 km from Kupwara, headquarters of North Kashmir district, on Kupwara-Chowkibal Road late Tuesday night. It further said that the Kupwara District Police laid an ambush at Heeri around 11 p.m. on Tuesday after learning through its sources that the “jawans of TA 160th – battalion had illegally felled some green conifer trees, most likely Deodar and sawn it into logs in a dense forest cover”. “According to the tip-off, one of the TA units has been planning to smuggle about 300 cubic feet of timber from Zirhama to the battalion headquarters of Heeri,” the Hindu said in its report. “The face-off was on as police were insisting to tow the seized vehicles with the timber to Kupwara and file a case under different provisions of the J&K Forest Act.” The police has denied the report and said the situation was handled in a mature manner and there was no instance of any clash between army soldiers and police personnel. “Army and Police have always worked in a professional and synergized way.”
