SSM (Sweet Story Monday) Every once in awhile I have an experience in my work which is profoundly moving. And it happened again a few weeks ago. I was at an outdoor event and a young couple brought me their toy poodle, who is fourteen years old. They had a number of concerns, mostly her health, how was she feeling, what could they do, and the like. We got through those questions, and I checked back with her to see if there was anything she wanted to share. And thats when it happened. It seemed like almost a random remark, like she was tapping me on the shoulder and saying, Oh, and by the way… In the sweetest, most grateful voice, she said to me, They tuck me in. I turned to the couple and said She says you tuck her in. The wife was momentarily stunned. Oh my God. We tuck her in. We tuck her in everywhere. We tuck her in on the couch, we tuck her in in the car, we tuck her in in bed. She paused for a moment, presumably to think of some other places that they also tucked her in, and I used the opportunity to dive in and interrupt, to tell them what their dog was telling me. I want you to know that tucking her in is to her the penultimate expression of love and caring. It means everything to her. And later I got to thinking about the feeling of being tucked in as a child. I cant assume that all of you reading this were fortunate enough to have that experience, but if you were, Im sure you remember the feeling of comfort and safety, the feeling of being loved, which accompanies being tucked in. Not so different, really, for the fourteen year old dog, as it is for the fourteen month old child.
