ST GEORGE Some food for thought for anyone who is gripped in the throes of nationalistic fervour. FACT: Georgios (his real name) was born in Lydda, Palestine. FACT: His father was Greek and his mother was Palestinian. FACT: He is patron saint of many countries and cities Georgia, England, Egypt, Bulgaria, Aragon, Catalonia, Romania, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia, Macedonia, Ukraine, Russia and Syria Genoa, Amersfoort, Beirut, Botoşani, Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Timişoara, Fakiha, Bteghrine, Cáceres, Ferrara, Freiburg im Breisgau, Kragujevac, Kumanovo, Ljubljana, Pérouges, Pomorie, Preston, Qormi, Rio de Janeiro, Lydda, Lviv, Barcelona, Moscow and Victoria FACT: He is also venerated in the Middle East by muslims. FACT: He is patron saint of Syphillus. Georgios died a horrible death for defending his beliefs and was tortured including laceration by a wheel of swords. He was resuscitated 3 times before being beheaded. I suspect he is turning in his grave at some of the low brow celebrations taking place today as his good name seems to have been hijacked by narrow minded patriots and right wing bigots that scares any genuine would be revellers away. So heres to St George, a man of honour and integrity. Its a shame that most people celebrating him today are not fit to wipe his arse.
