STAR LEADER: Politicians should be servants of the people PEOPLE were often cynical about former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka’s oft-repeated claim to be a ‘servant’ of the people. Yet, in truth, politicians should be ‘servants’ of the people. Kalonzo was right about that. The wild spending spree makes one wonder if politicians have scrapped any pretensions about being ‘servants’. Yesterday the executive colluded with Parliament to allocate them floors 11 to 27 of the Kenya International Conference Centre. That is in addition to Parliament’s recent acquisition of the multi-storey offices at Harambee Plaza and Continental Plaza. Even if the number of parliamentarians has doubled, do MPs and senators need so much space? Governors, not all of them, are also becoming very extravagant. Several of them have budgeted Sh50 million for their ‘entertainment’ allowance, Sh4.5 million per month. Others have bought fleets of Prados. County representatives are demanding mortgages. Others are staying in hotels when their houses are nearby. Our representatives are wasting money. They should have more modest aspirations. What is wrong with sharing an office with other MPs? What is wrong with staying in your old home even if you are governor? They should remember that in the final analysis they are ‘servants’ of the people.
