STAT OF THE WEEK In the modern era of the Olympic Games, there has been 17,283 medals awarded. The most has been awardsd to the USA, who have won 2,653 of them, or 15%. The next most, and only other nation to win more than a thousand was the now defunct Soviet Union, 1,204 medals, or 5.9%. Third is Great Britain, 802 medals, or 4.6%. France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, East Germany, the Peoples Republic of China, & Russia round out the top 10 all-time. Other national totals include Japan with 435, Canada with 423, Korea Republic with 288, Greece with 110, Turkey with 88, DPR Korea with 49. 73 of the current total 204 NOCs are yet to win a medal, including Cambodia, Honduras, Monaco, & Turkmenistan. Nover has an athlete competing as an Individual Olympic Athlete ever won a medal, we will see if Sochi 2014 will change that, as 3 athletes from India will compete under the Olympic flag, Himanshuu Thankur in Mens Giant Slalom Alpine Skiing, Nadeem Iqbal in Mens 15km Classical Cross-Country Skiing, & Shiva Keshavan in Mens Singles Luge.
