STEEZ ARE PROUD TO PRESENT THE SUMOCHIEF EP LAUNCH. Please Read On... Thankyou so much to everyone involved in the last STEEZ on the 24th of May who made it such a special place to be, both inspiring and moving. For the first time in a long time we were able to bring back some of the more spontaneous elements of the Steez night inviting some improvised performances and allot of collaborations throughout the night, which brought back some of that OG Steez feeling. Firstly massive ups to anyone and everyone who came down from 6pm to take part in the Space Jamm and an especially big thanks to those at the core of the Space Jamm band- Jake long, Olivir Haylett and Arnau Guichard who also played a transcendental, dope-fine five minutes at the end of Verbs, captivating our minds before the curtains were flung open. Alice Barlow was the only solo act to perform in the Verbs section, but boy did she rock it, those songs are so special ( Vice is just stuck in our heads!) and her performance was both humble and powerful. Slam the Poet and Cecil B from the infamous MVC both graced the Verbs Stage, which was a true pleasure, i dont think weve had them perform one after each other for a very long time. Slam came with some uplifting stuff to begin the section and Cecil came with his new piece -an Ode to South east! which you can imagine when down a treat. We should also mention Slam must have gone through every flow in the book during his Freestyle with the Space Jamm band, And his Freestyles are getting NASTY! Sean Mahoney was the only featured poet to perform ( as unfortunately the trains stopped Kareem arriving as they did so many of you who tried to make the trip down) but of course he delivered his set fantastically bringing the whole room to laughter and smiles. We were also very lucky to have Zia Ahmed perform a spur of the moment piece about first love and as usual the crowd was at the mercy of his words, evoking everything from laughter to a few silent tears. We were so blessed to have Nerija begin things on the larger stage with a mixture of old standards and there own warm and beautiful arrangements, hats of to Cassie Kinoshi ( also of Asaba Afrobeat Collective ) who was responsible for composing all the original works. Oscar Laurence Music and his band were electric, we cannot get the Evil song out of our heads! Jeeeees- its a true masterpiece, from the ballad intro to the introduction of the rest of the trio. He is a truly evocative writer! Southpaw played there last gig with Luke and what a special gig it was, joined by Ben Hauke MVC, Jacob Allen and Joe Armon-Jones on Keys. Majestic then took over the space and had the crowd jumping to there reggae sounds. DJ Hudnall - Punctauted the music throughout and also played a fantastic B2B set with Pedaler at the end, dropping everything from Afrobeat to melodic house, Just after Dj Loxton ( Neon Soul) and James Massiah ( The A & The E ) brought the funk and soul vibrations to the dance floor. We would also like to shout out Matt Rogers and Jay Marsh for the Artistic work, both artists came and decided to free- style pieces along with the Space Jamm and produced some absolutely inspiring works, some of which ( yet again) were purchased on the night! also there three artists that worked on three absolutely moving pieces in the lead up were: -James Neilson ( Steez poster) -Hannah Machover ( Nerija piece ) and vidi Descaves AKA Tastequiet ( Southpaw T&D piece ) We are very proud to announce that the next STEEZ is going to be the Sumochief EP launch and will so far feature mellowdies from: the otherworldly sounds of Parshmaune, the deep deep bars of mister MADLean and the spiritual groovings of Ben Hayes fresh from there EU tour with King Krule and Verbs from: Bridget Minamore!!! who hasnt been at Steez since she was the king of the Mic back in the honor oak Days, and more TBC.
