STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING, CUZ I’M ABOUT TO RUIN THE IMAGE AND THE STYLE THAT YOU’RE USED TO. I was checking my newsfeed, when i came across an item about The Voice. But this wasn’t some random dude playing a melodica, it was a Yalie I knew named Maiya Sykes. On the day of the airing, I sent a text to Adam Berenzweig because he played in a band with Maiya back in college. He left the office to join me, and we were beaming with joy as all four judges hit their buzzer within the first 8 bars of her singing. Are you allowed to feel pride for something you had nothing to do with? But, whatever. She KILLED IT. Then I had this crazy idea to ask her to join us for a holiday tune, except she lives in California. But if you don’t ask, you’ll never find out. So I did. She wrote me back, and said, “I’ve been meaning to get to NYC.” And a few weeks later, boomshakalaka. She caught a 6am flight from Vegas where she had a gig the night before, and arrived at my place around 5pm. But my neighbor was a little upset with the noise from earlier sessions, so I promised him we’d shut it down at 530pm. How can we rehearse and record in 30 minutes, I ask you???? Answer: Use a pro. We rehearsed once and she nailed it. So I said, “Let’s record,” and she said, “Let me change.” She disappeared for a quick moment, and emerged in holiday red, and then we laid down the track, and boom, it was 530 and we were done. Why is the band smiling so much at the end of the track? Because we are making MUSIC. The super nerd band is back with: James Huerta (drums) is the COO at Vital Health, where they use technology to monitor and alter behaviors that lead to chronic health problems. He’s looking for programmers. Adam Berenzweig (bass) is the CTO at Clarifai, a machine learning and image recognition software company. He’s not available as a programmer. Josh Dodes (keyboard) is a psychotherapist in Philadelphia and NYC. He’s hip and cool, and will Skype you instead of dragging you to a couch. Eyan Mitchelll (back-up vocals) works in Global Capital Markets Management for Morgan Stanley. He has a good voice. We should let him sing a solo some time.
