STORIES OF THE RIGHTEOUS (CALIPH UMAR BIN KHATTAB (MAY ALLAH BE PLEASED WITH HIM)) “How can I be concerned for the people if I do not suffer what they suffer?” During Umar’s (May Allah be pleased with him) Caliphate, a famine struck Medina and its surrounding area. Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) swore that he would not eat ghee, yogurt or milk until all the people could afford these things. When some ghee and yogurt reached the market in Medina, Umar’s (May Allah be pleased with him) servant bought these items for forty dirhams. He came to Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) and said. “O leader of the Muslims, Allah has fulfilled your oath and made your reward great. Some ghee and yogurt came to the marketplace and I bought them for you for forty dirhams.” Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) said, “You paid too much for them. Give them in charity, for I do not like to eat in an extravagant manner. How can I be concerned for the people if I do not suffer what they suffer?” And when the price of ghee became very high, Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) ate olive oil. His hunger caused his stomach to rumble but he would say, “Rumble as much as you like, for by Allah you will not get ghee until the people eat it!” SubhanAllah! What leader in today’s world feels this responsible for his citizens. May Allah’s Peace and Blessings be upon Umar ibn Khattab. And may Allah help us learn from the examples of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) and his blessed companions (May Allah be pleased with them all). Surely, they were the people that we need to emulate.
