STRENGTH TO CARRY ON “And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God” 1 Samuel 30:6 Anyone who is old enough to see the gramophone at work and now have access to iPod, home theatre and what have you will be amused and amazed at the same time. Amused because of how awkward (or shall we say ugly) the gramophone was and worked; and amazed to see how far man has gone in terms of technological innovations. To keep the gramophone going someone has to periodically wind it up, as that was the source of energy. Today things are fully digitalized and you can enjoy your music with great ease. But I will like to think of life, particularly the Christian vocation, in the way the gramophone worked. There is nothing digital in the faith; you need to put in effort to carry on. You have to know exactly how to wind yourself up so you don’t get discouraged and fall away. This is particularly so when you don’t get the results you are hoping for, or worse still when you lose the ones you already got. David in our text had lost virtually all that he and his colleagues had laboured for. Everybody was in pain at that moment and no one was in a position to encourage another. David did the right thing by encouraging himself in God. The Christian call is not a stroll where we saunter down the road; it’s a strenuous race that requires a lot of gut to make it to the finish line. You need plenty of encouragement to make it; but with all the encouragement you get from other quarters, learn to encourage yourself. Do have a nice a day!
