STRONG SUNDAY STORM ROLLS IN - Saturday Update- Good Morning Folks, A pretty calm day today across the Province, so be sure to get out and enjoy... as it wont be so calm tomorrow :) Snow rolls into Newfoundland overnight today with a transition to some heavy periods of rain early on Sunday for most as temperatures rise into the 6° to 10° range! That rain and those warm temps will be joined by some very gusty winds which lead to some rapid snow melt across the Island on Sunday. Today would be a great day to make sure youve shoveled off your nearest storm drain and make sure all that water on your property will have a place to go. In Labrador this is mainly a snow & wind event with 20+ cm looking set for some. Check out the timing of the Storm, with the latest Future Tracker here: youtu.be/V2ZqO_bAAfM The number one story with this Storm will no doubt be the winds. This is a powerful storm which will bring in strong Southeasterly winds across the Island early on Sunday morning & Wind Warnings are in place for the entire Island. Widespread 100+ km/h gusts are looking set. The strongest winds look set for Wreckhouse where gusts over 160 km/h are possible overnight and into early Sunday morning. As Southeasterly winds funnel through gaps in the Long Range Mountains, places like Bonne Bay prone to seeing these localized Gap Winds could see gusts 130+ km/h. Across the South Coast of the Island, the Avalon & up the Northeast Coast look set to see sustained winds near 70-80 km/h and widespread gusts in the 100-120 km/h range. The strongest gusts will be along parts of the Coast, especially where winds are blowing from the land back out over the water. We could also see some gusts in the 130 km/h range for those wide open and prone areas like Sagona Island, Cape Pine and Cape Race. In the afternoon... winds will shift from Southeast to Southwest and again well see some very strong winds. Sustained winds 60-70 km/h, with some strong wind gusts in the 100-110+ km/h range are set for Coastal Newfoundland, especially early in the afternoon. Winds will slowly ease through the afternoon, however as temperatures cool and the atmosphere becomes less stable, we could still see some very strong and isolated gusts right through supper time. The strongest winds on Sunday afternoon will likely be along the Strait of Belle Isle and in the Canada Bay area where Gusts in the 120+ km/h range are possible. Coastal Labrador... You folks arent included in my wind map above however will also see very strong Winds developing on Sunday. The North Coast from Nain to Makkovik will likely see Gusts of 90-110 km/h developing late Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening. Cartwright and the Southeast, gusts 70-90 km/h. As the Future Tracker shows above, were going to be seeing Snow rolling in overnight for Central & Western Newfoundland before changing to rain overnight and into early Sunday morning. Snowfall amounts look set to stay near or below 5 cm for most, before the change over. The Avalon and Eastern Newfoundland could see a few flurries overnight, but this is a 98% rain event with 15-30 mm looking set. The heaviest rain on the Island looks set for the Southwest Coast where a solid 30-40 mm looks set with some pockets of 50 mm possible by Sunday afternoon, Rainfall Warnings are in effect. The along the West Coast its back to flurries for you on Sunday afternoon, evening as temperatures fall, with onshore flurries and snow squalls firing up. The Northern Peninsula will generally see 10 cm of Snow with heavier amounts inland and over higher terrain before a change over to rain through Sunday morning. Snowfall amounts increase North & West of there with the 20-30 cm bulls-eye looking set to fall just West of the Storm track from Cartwright & Groswater Bay to Happy Valley-Goose Bay to Postville & Makkovik. Snowfall amounts drop off West of the track. This system and its strong Southerly flow will lead to pounding surf on Sunday morning, mainly along the South Coast. Special Weather Statements are in effect for the South Coast as well as the West Coast of the Island, warning of higher than normal water levels. The WAM model (attached) is projecting swell heights of 8-10 metres pushing in from the South on Sunday. All of your EC Warnings & Advisories from the Gander Weather Office can be found with the link below... be sure to check those out as well. Thanks for having a read. Enjoy your Saturday :) Ryan #nlwx
