SUE’S REVIEWS: NOAH “Noah” is a 138 minute PG-13 Rated Adventure/Drama directed by Darren Aronofsky starring Russell Crowe (Noah), Jennifer Connelly (Naameh) and Anthony Hopkins (Methuselah). This movie is an “original” rather than literal interpretation of the Biblical story of Noah as described in the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament. As the story goes, God was upset with the wickedness of man and he decided to send an apocalyptic flood lasting 40 days to destroy all living creatures. He chose to spare Noah and instructed him to build an ark and to undertake an epic rescue mission. This included saving his family and a pair of all living creatures. The atheist director of “Noah” has described this as the least Biblical Bible movie ever made. There is no mention of the word “God” in the film but it does refer to the “Creator”. On a philosophical and theological level, I have a problem with a movie about a biblical story that is not faith-based and which takes incredible liberty with the story as outlined in the Book of Genesis. The movie is very dark and violent and does not convey a sense of optimism or hope until the very end. Some of the characters, especially the so-called fallen angels or “watchers”, are comical and out-of-place. They resemble transformers or AT-ATs (All Terrain Armor Transports from “The Empire Strikes Back”) rather than figures from the Bible. What I like about the movie are the casting and acting (especially Jennifer Connelly as Noah’s wife), the incredible CGI (especially the animal migration onto the ark) and the values the film promotes (kindness, goodness, loyalty and renewal). But if you want to learn about, or revisit, the story of Noah’s Ark as told in the Bible, I recommend reading The Book of Genesis, chapters 6-9 in the Old Testament and not seeing this movie. I give “Noah” a 6.5 on the ABBONDANZOMETER (Scale of 1-10).
