SUNDAY, JULY 27 2014 GOD’S LEADING THROUGH VISIONS 2nd Chronicles 26:4 says “And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the Lord, God made him to prosper.” If someone comes to me and asks the question, “Do you see visions in your church”? The answer is simple and straightforward. Yes we do, but we do not make it our purpose to go looking for visions. We are neither clairvoyant nor are we psychic, or palm readers; we do not practice palm reading and other curious arts. However as a Spirit-filled church, we have the Holy Spirit who gives gifts. The Holy Spirit gives gifts for hearing, knowing and seeing the realm of the spirit. Visions involve seeing the realm of the spirit. In the Old Testament, God spoke to Israel through His Prophets. Prophets have understanding of visions and dreams and an understanding of how to interpret and administer the wisdom from visions and dreams. Daniel had these gifts and so did Joseph. The gifts from God of the ‘Word of Knowledge’, the ‘Word of Wisdom’ and the ‘Discerning of Spirit’ working in the life of a prophet make the prophet a sharp navigator of the realm of the Spirit. Joel 2:28 says “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions..” Acts 2: 17 says “And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.” When the Holy Spirit comes on believers, He opens the realm of the spirit wider for the believer as part of His role as our guide into all truth! Jesus also said the Holy Spirit will show us things to come and teach us things. As a Spirit filled believer you will see visions from time to time. A vision in this context is like a mini-drama, or set of pictures or a mini-video clip that is flashed before your eyes. It may seem like you’ve seen it physically but again it is a spiritual sight of events that is played before you very quickly. It may be as simple as a very slight flash of events and it may happen in a very short time. You will remember it and you may or may not immediately know the meaning. The book of Joel makes it clear that in the last days, believers will see visions! In the Old Testament, only prophets saw visions! Here, I must point out that we are not visions seekers! People who use visions or who have an expectation of guiding their lives primarily through visions have got some things wrong. God leads us through many ways and we must be well grounded in all those basic ways! Just like your children don’t skydive into school, they either walk or you drive them to school, you should not seek visions as the main way to communicate with God.
