SWATARA TOWNSHIP AWARDED GRANT FOR PAPER COMPOST RECYCLING BAGS FOR RESIDENTS: The paper recycling bags are part of a DEP Act 101 Section 902 Municipal Recycling Grant. Paper bags are the only leaf containers that will be accepted starting with this fall leaf pick collection. In May of 2014, the Swatara Township Board of Commissioners was awarded a Municipal Recycling Grant from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). This grant provided the Township with a new front end loader, two leaf collection systems, and paper recycling bags for Township residents. The Paper Recycling Bags or other recyclable paper bags will be the only bags collected or accepted at the Compost Facility. During the Spring and Fall Brush/Yard Waste collection weeks, Highway Department employees will only be collecting yard waste material and recyclable paper bags as containers. NO MORE plastic bags will be collected or accepted at the Compost Facility. One free paper recycling bag will be provided to each address in Swatara Township for each Brush Pick Up week (one for spring brush pick up and one for fall brush pick up). The bags can be picked up at the Municipal Building during normal business hours. Residents may also use any type of paper bag such as grocery bags or other commercial paper bag available at home supply stores as long as it is of a recyclable material. Additional bags are available for purchase at the Municipal Building at the cost of $1.00 per bag if desired. The bags will be available to pick up beginning the week of August 25th for the Fall Brush Collection week which is the week of September 15th. Leaves may still be raked to the curb as in the past. Part of the grant agreement was that the Township’s Compost Recycling Facility would become a single and complete recycling facility.
