SYNOPSIS FEEDBACK AUGUST 2014 I feel a huge sense of honour to be prompted among many robust minds; one of the least I consider myself having constantly feed from the wellspring of knowledge of the wonderful people on this forum. The depth of intellectual discourse here confers on all contributors, not only the status of scholars but ardent constructors of our joint heritage. The nudge to advance the step to which Synopsis was a part player stirs my mind. I recall that contributions on this forum to pull Nigeria out of a one party state was substantial role in the modalities of the merger and foundation laid for the merging of then opposition parties that fused into the All Progressive Congress (APC). The formation of the APC although applauded as deliberate alternative to deepen the democratic ethics and widen the space to proportional party, in the context of the PDP, should do more by being different in its political goal and pursuit in creating new opportunities to the Nigerian people in term of deliverables and governance. The much touted disappointing governance in the fifteen years of our democratic experience with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the center lays credence to why building a viable option in case the people so desire became imperative. And not only that, but having a strong political competitor, at least, that would make the ruling party better and wake it up from its slumber. This done, I believe that Synopsis, having had the ears of the crafters of the deal that consummated in the formation of the APC should volunteer this platform to monitor; not just the APC and its evolution but encourage even the PDP to be ideological based. The rate of defections or cross carpeting from and into these parties is a pointer that not much may have been gained in terms of securing an alternative. I still shudder at why it should worth an effort just to offer another platform to the political elite to test their popularity and access political offices just for that sake, if that was not to change the way we play the game. Much more than how we started, I recommend we play a balancing role in stabilizing the polity as we have always done but much more, to engage the leading political parties to build these two strong parties especially, to be identified with something, to be known for their distinctive ideas. My fear is that, should we continue in the same path we had treaded before, the orgy of defection would not only continue, the mix of two inseparable, identical or indistinguishable two parties without ideological base may still see us returning to Ground Zero. This role is phenomenal but with men and women of exceptional mix, courage and character as assembled in Synopsis, it is possible, if we continue to form non-partisan, non-religious and patriotic opinions and getting them to the right places, of course, not in isolation, but in collaboration with other Nigerians of goodwill and organizations with like passion. God bless us all.
