Sacrifice Scripture And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the age to come eternal life.” Luke 18:29-30 Observation Here Jesus has talking to the rich young ruler (RYR) about what is needed to inherit eternal life and reveals to him the personal cost of such an undertaking, for the RYR it seems like a very great cost indeed. The disciples hearing this are concerned as to who then can be saved at such cost. They point out to Jesus what they have left behind to follow him, and he reassures them with this verse. Application The reality is that we will indeed be required to let go the things of this world as we follow Jesus, but we can rest assured that we do not deny ourselves in vain, great reward awaits both now and after this life. Most of the things we will sacrifice will be detrimental to us in the long run or out of our sacrifice will come essential learning. For example the RYR, had he given his money to the poor would have learnt compassion, charity and love, and possibly gone on to many times more wealth either in coin or character. Sacrifice is difficult but Jesus assures us that it will be worth it. Prayer Please Lord, reveal the things that I still need to surrender to you and those I must sacrifice in your name. I, like the disciples, will give whatever necessary to gain the end prize of eternal life.
