Sad story; It was on a television special that I watched..In the 80s Scientists were experementing with apes, trying to measure their inteligence.One particular scientist was given a baby ape and his job was to teach it American sign language. The experement lasted for a number of years. The Ape and the sciemtist became close. When the experement ended The ape.now fully grown. The ape was shipped off to some holding pen they had for experemental animals. He was kept in a small cage; severely neglected and abused. Finally an animal rights group got a court order forcing the university to find homes for these animals. Many had to be euphenised. The ape in our story by this time was 15 years older and suffered greatly being kept in a small cage. He suffered horribly from arthritis. However, the vets decided that they would place him in a zoo in another state where he could live out the rest of his life in comfort. Upon reading the Apes history one of the animal rights activists decided to get in contact with the scientists that worked with him when he was a baby. The scientist was more than willing to see his old friend again. The scientist was an older man by now. He went to the shelter the day before his old friend was to be shipped away. He went to a large holding area where their were a number of apes. Soon one ape came to fence. This ape was crippled and slow, not the friend he remembered. Soon the ape started working fingers. The scientist realised that the ape was using American sign language. Soon the apes hand went through the bars of the fenc . The scientist took his old friends hand the ape spelled out the word love in his hand. There each one set holding hands for the longest time.d
