Sadly, my little Shempie passed on to Chickie Heaven today. He was my last little chicken of the original 124. He was almost 14 years old, a Black-tailed white Japanese rooster - just beautiful, and sweet. Hell hopefully be with his brothers, Moe, Curly and Larry Bird, and also with his best friend, Georgie the Talking Chicken! (Go ahead - laugh! Shempie doesnt care!) It was quite an experience raising all my little chickens. The hens were all good friends, but the roosters were typical males - each had to show his masculinity in a different way. I had to separate them according to size and disposition. Fun to realize chickens have personalities too. Laverne and Shirley were big girls - Rhode Island Reds - but so sweet and gentle. Little Clara was tiny - an Old English Game Bantam - but she was in charge of most of the girls. The Silkies were the most beautiful breed - Miss Olivia and her brothers, Newton and John, were stunning, and they knew it!! I could go on forever about the many breeds and their personalities, but tonight is for homage to Mr. Shempie -- a patient and sweet little boy who loved to be held and told how beautiful he was. Rest in Peace, little guy.
