Sale of pork and movement of pigs has been banned in Mzimba following the outbreak of African swine fever. District Animal Health and Livestock Development Officer Philemon Mtete told Capital FM that the ban is a control measure to prevent the disease from spreading to the rest of the district. According to Mtete, the outbreak of the disease has affected three areas namely Mbawa, Viwangalala and Mjinge where 34 pigs have so far died. He said about 9130 pigs from these three areas are at risk of dying if preventive measures are not followed, since the disease is contagious.
